Family Medicine Residency ProgramSouth Nassau Communities HospitalThank you for your interest in the Family Medicine Residency Program at South Nassau Communities Hospital. We are a suburban community-based medical school-affiliated program, with easy access to New York City resources. As the only residency sponsored by our 441-bed community hospital, family medicine is the center of all teaching activities. We combine academics and education with hands on, direct patient care. Our affiliation with several hospitals permits access to the resources of larger tertiary institutions. We also have a more than twenty-five-year history of a strong collaborative relationship with the Department of Family Medicine at SUNY-Stony Brook School of Medicine. We have since expanded our role as teachers of Family Medicine by developing rotations for students from New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and obtaining dual accreditation from the AOA and the ACGME. The three years of residency training in family medicine are possibly the most important in one’s entire medical education. Applicants should know as much as possible about the programs they are considering. Our program is committed to providing the best possible educational experience for the resident. The focus of the program is on education, with a strong didactic program and easy access to our Family Medicine faculty, as well as other specialists and subspecialists involved in our teaching program. We take pride in our warm, supportive educational environment, with personalized attention provided to each resident. Our Family Medicine Center, which was designed and built for residency training, is the hub of the residency program. It allows the full spectrum of family medicine to be practiced, including a large pediatric and women’s health population. Additionally, involvement with a community nursing home and area schools and agencies permits the residents to have a well-rounded inpatient and outpatient experience. In the more than 25 years of the program’s operation, we have had more than one hundred graduates. They practice medicine from coast to coast with a significant number practicing in our community and on staff at South Nassau. Thank you for considering South Nassau for your residency training. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at 516-255-8414. Very sincerely yours, Samuel A. Sandowski, MD |
